Happy 17th birthday Ben!

That hug Grammy and I got on your 17th birthday – despite the coronavirus “six-foot distancing” – sure felt great.  It also brought tears to our eyes.

We’ve all been on this COVID-19 journey, self-isolating in our homes and paying attention to the stay-at-home statewide mandate.  It’s been eight weeks without hugs.

As I reported in my April blog, Grammy and I have made it through thanks to our weekly in-person visits to your house and the Beaupre’s.  We stay apart, but are together.  We’ve tried Zoom meetings, but they’re just not the same.  Seeing you guys is the highlight!

We went inside your house and hung out in the living room and later, the kitchen.  We were excited to bring our two presents, your first guitar, and a TV for your new room.

IMG_5433You loved the guitar, a shiny black Fender acoustic dreadnought with Venetian cutaway body. “It’s really cool,” you said. “I love it, thank you so much.”  It has built-in electronics and a pre-amp to produce rich, louder sounds.  You’ve taken a guitar class at Dover High, so you’re ready to embark on new sonic adventures.  Remember the old joke,  Question: “How do I get to Carnegie Hall? Answer: “Practice, practice, practice.”

Knowing how to play guitar is a sure-fire way to meet new people and deepen friendships.  It’s like a magnet!  That’s what happened to Uncle Tim when he went to Boston College. He still plays it today and gets a lot of satisfaction. Emma is digging it too.

Your next present was a smart TV for your new bedroom. You were psyched.  Now you can watch YouTube, Hulu, Netflix and other channels in the comfort of your bachelor pad hangout in the sky.  The 1-1/2 years of work your Dad invested to convert the attic was sure worth it, your rooms look awesome.  Ditto for Molly and Jack’s updated rooms one floor below.

I can’t believe you’re 17.  Although it’s hard as a parent or grandparent seeing your children and grandchildren getting older, we have zero regrets.  You’ve been front and center in our lives very step of the way.  You’ve given us such joy and happiness.

We’re so proud of who you are and what you stand for.  Patient. Super smart. Kind. Funny. Easy going. Destined for greatness.

Lots of love Ben and happy birthday. Thanks again for the hug.
