the end of an era!

With Jack’s graduation last night, four “generations” of Clickman kids have attended pre-school at Dover’s My School.  Your family should have received a plaque or trophy (or something) to honor the achievement!  It’s amazing the walls are still standing, you guys were wild and crazy kids…  well maybe some of the time!  I learned something new… Ben designed the My School “dragonfly” logo that is still used to this day.  You should be receiving royalty payments Ben!

Hello teenage years! 13 awesome things about you

Happy Birthday Ben!

It’s been one of the highlights of my life (Grammy too) watching – and being a close part of – your transformation from a tiny baby to a young adult.

How did 13 years fly by so fast? You’re a teenager!  What??!!??!!

For this special occasion, here’s my list of 13 awesome things about Ben Clickman

your sense of humor-  every time I’m around you I’m reminded of the wonder of smiling and being happy.  You have an amazing gift Ben, the power to see humor in life, to make others smile, and laugh!  It’s the gift that keeps on giving.  You’ll always have friends and will be successful because of it. Nurture your fantastic sense of humor to make the world a happier place.

your brainpower – it’s been easy to see (for a long time) you’ve got one heck of a smart brain in that head of yours.  Knowledge = the edge for success.  So read, push, seek, find, learn.  And keep making the Honor Roll!

your good looks –  You’re a good looking dude, always have been, always will be.  You can’t help it, so are your parents and grandparents, so how could you miss!  As your body goes through the biological changes of teenagerness (I made it up), your inner confidence will grow, grow grow.  So don’t worry about a thing, cause every little thing is gonna be alright.

your personality –  you’ve got a wonderful way about you Ben. You’re probably not even aware of it, but you make people around you feel good, and that’s an amazing gift. Not many people convey this kind of vibe. You’re not a bragger or focused on yourself… you listen, smile and always come across with humility and kindness.  It’s never about Ben Clickman, it’s about others. In a world of self-absorbed, narcissistic people, you stand out!

your ability to be a true friend – you’ve already learned one of the most important lessons in life: the importance of friends.  I love the way you interact with yours, laughing, having fun, being a good listener and caring.

your easy going nature – you, sir, are not high maintenance in a world that’s increasingly filled with high maintenance people!   You make me feel relaxed the second I’m around you.  I could hang out with you all day, every day.

your potential – I can spot potential in people.  I’ve worked with thousands of them and hired hundreds of them.  You’ve got what it takes to conquer the world.  The personality, brains, dedication and focus to set the world on fire. You give it your all and keep working hard. This stick-with-it-ness  (a word I just made up)  made you an Honor Roll student, a smart soccer player, talented bugle player and askilled gamer.  Achieve your potential Ben and you will conquer whatever you want to conquer.

your love of animals –  “Be the person your dog thinks you are.”  Love that quote.  Apple and Ruby are two lucky dogs!

your appreciation  –  Some of the words that jump into my brain when I think of you are thankful, kind, appreciative and polite.  Not many “kids” are like that!  Heck, not many adults are like that! You’re not a brat! You don’t take things for granted!  What a fantastic way to be.

your inspiration – being around you makes me a better person. I learn important things from you (what I’m talking about in this blog).  That’s the way you make me feel. I want to be like you.

your athletic skills –  Having never played on a sports team (my parents didn’t encourage that sort of thing), I admire how you’ve faced challenging moments on the field in the heat of competition and risen above. And how you became so smart and skilled at soccer after years of hard work, learning new skills and facing tough competition.  You personify the saying “There’s no “I” in team.”

your opportunity to shine  – it’s not easy being the oldest of four kids in a family… your siblings look up to you, your parents expect a lot.  You were the first of seven grandchildren for Grammy and I, so you’re leading the way for us too.  While it may sometimes feel like there’s pressure to excel, remember that’s actually a good thing because it shows how much people believe in your capabilities and possibilities.  The quote below reminds me of you… these are the attributes that make up the Ben Clickman I know.

the love you share –  drum roll please… here’s the #13 reason why you’re awesome (with a little help from The Beatles):
You’re easy to love because you give love to others.  Seriously dude, you do that.
Nothing feels better than getting a hug from you.  When you give Grammy a kiss it makes her day.  When I hear you say “I love you Papa,” it melts my 62-year-old heart.
Happy 13th Ben!  You are one funny, smart, good looking, easy going, happy, kind, friendly, athletic, appreciative, thankful, inspiring, talented, determined and loving person… destined to have a very bright future.

Easter 2016!

IMG_6242Last year our Easter egg hunt was on the beach… this year it was at our new house @ 30 Shore Lane in Dover.  As soon as everyone was here, the wild search began for brightly colored eggs (with money and candy inside). Up and down and all around you went, a dozen eggs apiece after all the mysteries were solved.   The Samurai Seven posed for a group photo featuring simultaneous bunny mouth posing, impressive!  The weather was delightful with bright sunshine… we played football on the front lawn and hiked down to the Piscataqua riverbed finding treasures along the way.  Hoppy Easter 2016!

Grammy’s retirement party in Portsmouth!

cccccEveryone had a great time at Grammy’s “retirement” party, held at Martingale Wharf in Portsmouth overlooking the Piscataqua River.  We wish you could have been there but you had soccer tryouts. We missed you!

While she’s only 60 years old… young to stop working…  it was the right time for a number of reasons. Grammy and I built a successful business (Beaupre & Co. Public Relations) from scratch beginning in May, 1983.   Having worked together nearly every day for 33 years, it will be a big adjustment for both of us.  We made a great team if I say so myself – she was “inside” and I was “outside.”  She handled the people management and financial side; I handled the client and new business side.  It was a match made in heaven!

We just saw one of the biggest movies in history!

Star Wars, always my favorite sci-fi movie, debuted the latest film in the now seven film franchise this week: The Force Awakens.  Uncle Tim, Camden, Ben and Emma (aka The 3 Musketeers) and yours truly made the journey on a cold winter night, the day after the official opening on Friday, December 18.

It was a big deal for a bunch of reasons:

  • It featured the original “big three” actors – Harrison Ford (as Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia). and Mark Hamill (in a brief cameo role at the end as Luke Skywalker).https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a2/Star_Wars_The_Force_Awakens_Theatrical_Poster.jpg
  • it was directed by J.J. Abrams (his first Star Wars) who lovingly returned the movie to its  “original three” standard of quality (the second three films were not very good in my and many others’ opinions).  It was like watching the original Star Wars from 1977!
  • We went with your Dad aka “Uncle Tim” who was born in 1977 and grew up loving the Star Wars movies.  In the early 1980’s, I  built a six foot x four foot Star Wars set in our basement at 1 Rowland Street in Somersworth, NH that featured a swamp (where Yoda lives), the winter planet “Hoth” (featured in the second movie “the Empire Strikes Back”) and a sand planet (Tatooine where Luke lived as a boy, featured in the first Star Wars).  We’d play for hours with the figurines, battling the Dark Force.
  • the movie eventually set all kinds of records including the fastest film to gross $1 billion – 12 days. And the biggest worldwide opening weekend and single weekend gross – $529 million.
  • Emma and Ben – you had never seen a Star Wars movie, so this was your first experience.
  • Camden (thanks to his Dad) binge-watched all six of them before seeing the Force Awakens.
  • whether it was your first Star Wars experience or 20th, it was fun and fantastic.

7 reasons our winter getaway rocked!

I’ve been trying to organize a winter getaway to my favorite ski area – Bretton Woods – for years… always calling too late to get reservations.  I got my act together in 2015 – making reservations in July!  On January 21, we descended upon our private condo overlooking Mt. Washington, staying through Sunday January 24.

Seven reasons why this winter getaway rocked:

#1 – we were together, all 13 of us, a combination that always equals FUN!  No one was sick, everyone was in a good mood, we were ready to go!

# 2 – we tried exciting new things, like swimming at night in an outdoor pool in zero degree weather on a Full Moon Night!  We were crazy, jumping into snowbanks frontwards and backwards, rubbing snow on our bodies before hurrying back into the pool. It was a special moment, it was Full Moon Madness!

# 3 – a world class view –  I’ve seen a lot of beautiful sights in my travels, and the Mt. Washington Hotel with Mt. Washington behind it is second to none.

IMG_5625# 4 – the condo we stayed at –  we had an entire house to ourselves with three floors.  plenty of room for everyone.  there was even a bus pickup service to and from the hotel and mountain.

IMG_5565

IMG_5618# 5  –  the view of Mt. Washington –  this is what we saw when we looked out our front window – spectacular!  The tallest mountain on the East Coast and crystal clear at the top, so unusual during the winter time!

IMG_5556# 6  – the weather –  Although it was the coldest four days of 2016, it wasn’t windy, so the skiing and lifts were way better than normal.  Plenty of snow cover on most trails, little to no ice, unusually good for East Coast skiing!

IMG_0290# 7 – the sledding was slippery fun –  on our last day we tried something different – tubing! what a great way to end our winter getaway!

Merry Christmas Ben!

10 reasons why this was a wonderful Christmas:

  1. Together –  all 13 of us were together all day long and everyone was healthy. That’s the best present Grammy and I could ever receive.  We love having you with us, being together… we’re so lucky.
  2. Photo –  the Seven Samurai (you’re one of them!) all cooperated this year and let me take a Christmas photo. I’ve included it below.
  3. Cyclone City – that’s the only way to describe what happens after the photo is taken… it’s a tornado of activity as you unwrap presents, shout out, interact with each other and enjoy the magical moments.  We go overboard with the quantity and variety of presents, but it’s always given us joy to give back and make others happy.  We won’t be always be able to do this, especially as we get into our retirement years, but we’ve been fortunate and you have reaped the benefits, bringing Grammy and I great joy.
  4. Special presents – Grammy and I got heartwarming presents from you, our incredible grandchildren… the gifts you make for us with your heart, imagination and talent… those always mean the most!  Proudly displayed in my office, they will keep me smiling all year round.
  5. Our new house – this was a special Christmas because it was the first one in our new house at 30 Shore Lane in Dover Point.  We love it here and it already feels like home.
  6. The weather – it was one of the warmest Christmas days ever in New England, pushing into the mid-60’s.  Boston hit 70 degrees!  We actually opened several of the windows we were so warm.  After the record-breaking snow we got this year, it didn’t bother me seeing the green grass.
  7. Seeing you play outside – No coats, boots, jackets, gloves and scarves this year… no bitter cold… so you all hit the driveway and front yard, playing ball, running around, doing cartwheels, going for a walk.  Very rare in the history of Christmas days!
  8. Being ourselves – we’re not a formal family, boring intellectuals, stilted or dull.  We’re full of life, spontaneity and everyone has the freedom to be who they are without pretense or judgment.  It’s a house filled with love and laughter.
  9. The natural ebb and flow of the day –  there’s an “UP-Even-down” flow to the day. It starts off fast and furious, then slows down a bit after the presents are opened, then picks up for the appetizers and dinner, then gets quiet for a bit, then picks up again for play time, then by the end everyone is dragging, lethargic and slow, ready to go home and hit the sack.  The fact that you guys get up multiple times during the night in anticipation of Christmas, and start off so early in the day, has a lot to do with the pace of the day.  Everyone runs out of gas!
  10. Saying bye-bye to 2015 – I always regard Christmas as the last meaningful day of the year, the last hurrah as we move toward a new year.  I count the many blessings we have had over the past 12 months, there were so many.

Merry Christmas!
